Carlton Moor Gliding Club had its roots in the Newcastle Gliding Club founded in 1931, becoming the Newcastle and Teesside Gliding Club when it moved to Carlton Moor in the early 1960s. For reasons unknown flights seem to have ceased at the end of 2008.
I visited the site in late 2011 and although vandalised there was still quite a lot of equipment lying around, I kept it off this public website to avoid it getting pillaged by scrapmen or further trashed by vandals. A friend has visited at the end of 2012 and reports that sadly the whole place is now pretty much ruined and stripped.
Theres a large hanger, presumably for glider storage
And a club hut with a workshop
Kitchen
Also an office with books recording all the flights over the years
Including the final flight by G Terry and D Heslop on 5th October 2008.
There was also a seperate accomodation hut decorated much in the style of a 1970s semi.
UPDATE : As of April 2013 the buildings have been demolished and all traces removed.
I didn’t even know the club had closed!
I would have thought someone would have taken the log books with them.
Heres a link to an application to remove the old buildings

We had a great time there. Incredibly rough airfield but a great club!
Flew here in the 80’s,K13 and Falke with Ged Terry,Alan Spellman
Rough site but great fun.😀
I flew their from around 1984-1986 and went solo at 16 in the K8. Great times and fond memories of flying with Ged snd his aerobatics on tge last flight of the day; driving the tractor and winch….. must have been only £3-4 per flight of a typical 20mins.

Worked there 1966 with the Army. Built the second runway. Spent 4 weeks living in a tent half way between the club and Carlton village in April. From the village pub to camp was a 2 bottle of Newcastle brown journey . Great fun.
I went to school with a fine chap called Peter Irving who was was one of the youngest to attain his solo licence thanks to his time spent here. Heard lots of tails of good times up there. Shame it lost its way and had to be demolished
Flew out of there with 1869 (Middlesbrough) Squadron of the ATC in the late 70s. Heartbreaking to find it’s all gone now. Sadly missed.
Only flew at Carlton once… 5 mins in a K13 off a winch launch on the 9t August 1980. Years later ended up dropping onto the Northern Ridge whilst flying from Sutton and remember seeing the site deserted, but the hangar still there. In September 2022, soared the Northern ridge again but couldnt see any signs of where the old club was.. despite looking carefully for an hours or so… Just memories now.
