No idea if the French chalk graffiti underneath the Regent was done officially by the film crew or just spontaneous by the extras, its long since disappeared and been replaced by the modern variant.

The graffiti was done officially by the Atonement art department the weekend prior to the filming of the iconic beach scene. The images were based on actual photographs of graffiti taken at Dunkirk. There was three of us who worked on the Graffiti during Saturday afternoon and on Sunday morning (mid August 2006).
