This is one that’s intrigued me since my childhood, cemented to the wall of a house in Staithes.
This covert was planted in memory of Spadger.
1st Baron Sparrow
The hero of a hundred fights
Died March 1901
‘Spadger’ is a slang term for a sparrow.
Another smaller stone carries the name ‘Fred’
I was always told it was the headstones of the fighting dogs .
FRED can be found on gravestones in Denmark which translates as “peace”
These are both ( or possibly replica’s ) now cemented to the front garden wall of a house in hornsea , east yorkshire .
