Boulby was a relatively short-lived and small mine compared to many in the area as it was bounded by Loftus and Grinkle mines and the sea. It still claimed the lives of several workers.
Amongst them Joseph Cook who was killed April 10th 1918.
In these health and safety dominated times, it is easy to forget how dangerous mining was back at the turn of the century. Thankfully more is being done now to remember the great influence mining had on the history of our area through public art and other such displays.
