These old shop signs have been revealed by recent work on 17 Milton Street.
“Fruiterer &” above the left window.
“Ironmongers” above the right window.
A family member recalls that the hardware store was called run by a family called Fletcher.
Fletcher’s Hardware store was actually in the shop which occupies the corner site to the left of this building. Fletcher’s was taken over by Barker’s who lived in The Crescent in the 1970’s. Barker’s was the only place to buy ‘Standard’ Fireworks in Saltburn. Mr Barker’s son owned the first racing bike that I ever saw.
In Bulmer’s 1890 Directory there is a Mr Atkinson listed as an ironmonger on Milton Street, but no street number given.
