Stewarts Clothiers occupied this site from 1896 and 1963
The existing building is inscribed as having been rebuilt in 1912.
This photo from Picture Stockton show it shortly before closure in 1962.
Hope that somewhere in the ether is a photo of the large advertising cut-out they had in the upper window in the mid ‘70s : guy with big afro, Jason King ‘tash and groovy suit???
I used to get my school uniform from Stewarts in the 1940s. I remember the shop well!
The building is currently, January 2016, fully scaffolded and seems to be undergoing refurbishment, roof down.
I’m pretty sure it didn’t close in 1962, as I used to buy my Wrangler jeans and Levi jackets there in the early 70’s.
