The countryside location may seem unusual now, but wartime air base RAF Wombleton is nearby.
Pillboxes were often scattered round the perimeter of airfields so can appear a long way from the relatively small cluster of buildings that make up what’s typically thought of as the base.
Looks like Wobleton is still used but WWII airfields were usually larger than in contemporary use as they would disperse the aircraft to reduce the damage a single bomb could do.
