There are numerous wooden carvings immediately around the car park area of the visitors centre.
These owls are the same as those in Errington Woods so must be by Steve Iredale
His work is generally animals, so this is most likely his too.
This one seems a little more basic, perhaps some sort of workshop of kids ?
This walker is Steve Iredale again and dates from the Diabetes UK Great North Walk in 2010
This final carving of a face into a live tree is very interesting.

Loftus Stonemason Sculpture
Mayor Olwyn Peters unveiled the sculpture on Wednesday 18th April. Designed by artist Steve Tomlinson of Stokesley and cast by Geoff Robinson in Liverton Mines.
The location was the site of Arrowsmiths Monumental Mason Yard from 1905, owned later by Edgar Colbeck until the late 1960s
Against the neighbouring buildings are a number of fragments of carved masonry from the site.
Skinningrove Merman Mosaic
This mosaic depicting the merman legend on Skinningroves Riverside Building was unveiled by Mayor Olwyn Peters in March 2012
It was created by the Whitecliffe Primary School children under the supervision of Glynis Johnson
Theres also a nice set of tiles showing a row of local cottages.
Update : Looks like this was incomplete on my first visit as a dog has been added looking at the mermans fish.
Lingdale Mining Heritage Park
I have previously covered some of the Ironstone Reminders around Lingdale, but since that post in 2009 some additional items have appeared such as this plaque.
This Lingdale Junction train sculpture was unveiled on 1st December 2011 and funded by Lingdale Liftoff
Also new is a plaque commemorating the mine workers from 1873 – 1962, including the 8 men killed in an underground gas explosion on Monday 24th August 1953
John Butcher (48), Jack Breckon (65), Tom Breckon (34), Anthony Carter (19), William Grayson (16), Jack Ward (28), Charles Bottomley (26) and Jack Davison(52)
7 of the 15 men in the explosion survived and I recently saw the grave of Anthony McCormick who was 18 at the time. His grave in Redcar cemetary records the event.
Redcar Figures Sculpture
This piece seems to be known simply as ‘Redcar Figures Sculpture’ by J Tweedy in 1999
There’s a mermaid, lifeboatman and Captain Cook (a tenuous link, his sister and father have Redcar connections)
A pirate complete with parrot, hook, eye-patch and peg-leg ? (i’ve never heard of any association of Redcar with pirates real or fictional)
Finally theres a genuine piece of Redcar history with Gertrude Bell on a camel.
Birdman Seat, Newham Grange Farm
This bench at Newham Grange Farm was carved from oak by Keith Alexander, it was originally part of an art project about the wildlife on Marton West Beck.
Queens Diamond Jubilee Knitting, Saltburn
Ralph Ward Jackson Statue, Hartlepool
Ralph Ward Jackson (7 June 1806 – 6 August 1880) was the founder of West Hartlepool and was the towns first MP in 1868.
The sculptor was Edward Onslow Ford
It was donated by Colonel J. W. Cameron, the founder of Camerons brewery to mark the jubilee of the opening of the towns first dock and harbour.
The statue was unveiled on 12th June 1897 by the Marquis of Londonderry.
Sundial Sculpture, Hartlepool
This sculpture of a sundial by Neil Talbot and was received by Mayor Gwynneth Hanson on May 15th 1995
It was commissioned by Cleveland Arts (now Tees Valley Arts)
It stands on some tiles which show local geology but they are in very poor condition already.
