These two houses by the railway crossing on Redcar Lane were built in 1865 by the North Eastern Railway Company. This dates them to 4 years after the line was extended from Redcar to Saltburn
The house on the left retains much of its original character, while the one on the right has been completely obscured by moderns windows, doors and peddle dash.

Olympic Flame in Redcar
Fortunately I only had to walk a couple of minutes from my front door to capture this one.
A large convoy of promotional lorries came through first to get everyone hyped up.
I’ll have to search for myself taking this photo.
Then the torch arrived.
I’m not sure who the torchbearer is there as he doesn’t seem to be any of the people listed on the official website for this section.
Redcar Figures Sculpture
This piece seems to be known simply as ‘Redcar Figures Sculpture’ by J Tweedy in 1999
There’s a mermaid, lifeboatman and Captain Cook (a tenuous link, his sister and father have Redcar connections)
A pirate complete with parrot, hook, eye-patch and peg-leg ? (i’ve never heard of any association of Redcar with pirates real or fictional)
Finally theres a genuine piece of Redcar history with Gertrude Bell on a camel.
Old Sea Wall revealed, Redcar
Thanks to Dave Woods for pointing out that the work to renew the sea wall at Redcar has revealed something interesting. When the concrete has been removed from the area in front of the Park Hotel a solid sandstone wall has been revealed.
I suspect this might be short lived as the new sea wall will be going on top of it.
I’ve dug out an old photo which shows the same wall, although I have no idea of its date.
Update : This is hidden from view once more now the work in this area has progressed
Athina Livanos, Redcar 28th February 1937
I recently had the good fortune to obtain these original photographs from a local auction, they are not the same as any others i’ve seen of the incident.
Despite the Greek name, the Athina Livanos was a 4824 ton steamer built by Grays of Hartlepool and completed in October 1936, as this beaching took place on 28th February 1937 the ship was brand new and possibly on its way to its new owner.
A short Pathe News clip can be viewed here
The Athina Livanos was lost on 29/11/1943 when it was torpedoed in the Gulf of Aden by the Japanese submarine I-27
Redcar Rabbit Aerials
A piece of very modern history, but something thats probably becoming rarer and fading from people memories given the huge advances since then.
The Rabbit mobile phone network started in May 1992 and operated until just December 1993 before going under, unlike modern systems you had to stand within 100m of an aerial which were advertised by wall mounted signs and it couldn’t accept incoming calls !
These two example are both within sight of the Redcar clock.

Old Stables, Rocket Terrace, Coatham
The Old Stables are currently a blacksmiths / metalwork shop
Theres a 1884 datestone above the window
I’m currently unsure if they were the stables for any building in particular, the New Inn around the corner had closed by then according to the plaque.
The only structure of note on the 1894 map seems to be the coastguard station, hence the name Rocket Terrace as it was manned by the Rocket Brigade
United Buses Ghostsign – Redcar

This sign apparently dates from the opening of the bus station in 1938.
