By pure chance I happened to drive past on the 24th of July and find the demolition taking place, here are some before and after shots.

Eston Town Hall, Demolition

The James Finegan Hall was already gone by this point.

James Finegan Hall Demolition, Eston
This hall was the home of a Mighty Wurlitzer organ from 1981 (having arrived there from Redcar pier after it’s demolition, although originally from the Granada Theatre in Bedford)

Saltburn Water Tower

Saltburn Water Tower was built in 1865 and designed by North Eastern Railway Company architect William Peachey who is also responsible for Saltburn Station.
Saltburn Water Tower
It supplied water to Saltburn with water pumped from Skelton Beck, although its useful life was short-lived until water was piped from Lockwood Beck in 1878.

Railway staff lived in the lower floors of the water tower, but sadly it was demolished and redeveloped in 1905. The distinctive light Pease bricks were reused to build the nearby houses known as “Water Tower Terrace”

This new plaque on Saltburn Stores which marks the location was unveiled on 1st July 2012 by Parish Council leader Paul Smith.

Olympic Flame in Redcar

Fortunately I only had to walk a couple of minutes from my front door to capture this one.
Olympic Flame in Redcar
A large convoy of promotional lorries came through first to get everyone hyped up.

I’ll have to search for myself taking this photo.

Then the torch arrived.

I’m not sure who the torchbearer is there as he doesn’t seem to be any of the people listed on the official website for this section.

Old Sea Wall revealed, Redcar

Thanks to Dave Woods for pointing out that the work to renew the sea wall at Redcar has revealed something interesting. When the concrete has been removed from the area in front of the Park Hotel a solid sandstone wall has been revealed.
Redcar Old Seawall
I suspect this might be short lived as the new sea wall will be going on top of it.

I’ve dug out an old photo which shows the same wall, although I have no idea of its date.

Update : This is hidden from view once more now the work in this area has progressed

Middlehaven / Ship Inn Middlesbrough

When I took this first photo in 2009 the Middlehaven was still open.
Ship Inn, Middlehaven
Middlesbroughs oldest pub the Ship Inn dated from 1831, although in recent times it sat in the no-mans land of the demolished St Hildas area.
Ship Inn, Middlehaven
Sadly it was destroyed by fire earlier this year.
Looking at the state its in now, it seems likely another of Middlesbroughs historically important buildings will be demolished.

Athina Livanos, Redcar 28th February 1937

I recently had the good fortune to obtain these original photographs from a local auction, they are not the same as any others i’ve seen of the incident.
Athena Livanos, Redcar 28th February 1937
Despite the Greek name, the Athina Livanos was a 4824 ton steamer built by Grays of Hartlepool and completed in October 1936, as this beaching took place on 28th February 1937 the ship was brand new and possibly on its way to its new owner.

Middle Warren Pillbox, Hartlepool

This whole area is now in the middle of an extensive housing development, so I don’t think this one is going to be around much longer.Hartlepool Pillbox, Middle Warren

The Defence Of Britain database from the 1990s lists many in this area that are now gone under housing.

UPDATE :
I have received information that as of 26th July 2012, this pillbox has been demolished. Another one bites the dust.

Upleatham Mine, East Winning Engine House

I have previously posted about this location back in 2009 when it was completely obscured by undergrowth. At this time, all that was visible was a couple of blocks of masonry.
Upleatham Ironstone Mine East Winning Haulage Engine
During late 2011 a group I am involved with began excavating the site and uncovered the sizeable pit which would have housed twin drums for the hauling engine.
A Big Hole in the Woods
The site was extensively photographed and recorded and would have made an interesting feature in the woods for those interested in local mining heritage.A Big Hole in the Woods
Despite much local support and regular interest from passers-by, alas the council did not share our enthusiasm for the project and insisted in no uncertain terms that we back-fill the hole immediately.

So if you visit the site now, our mining heritage is once again hidden in the name of keeping the public safe. The Cleveland Industrial Archaeology Society will be running a walk to the site on 19th May.
