Pig and Whistle, Redcar

Geotag Icon Show on map

The Pig and Whistle was demolished in 2001 when Redcar was redeveloped, Dave Woods has kindly contributed the following photos and his memories of the pub.

Pig and Whistle Redcar
The location for anyone who does not know was where Morrisons car park now stands just before the railway crossing.
Pig and Whistle Redcar
Not being brought up in Redcar and moving there in 1970 I don’t know too much about it’s early years. It was well liked for the quality of the beer pulled with a massive creamy head that they called a boiler. As you can see from the door it used the be The Alexandra Hotel in former years

The name Pig and Whistle, I was told years ago was a nickname for the place. The whistle from the trains and I’m assuming pigs nearby. People brought ornamental pigs from all over the world to give to the pub. Some of these can be seen in this photo taken in the bar.

The landlord at the time told me that he had boxes and boxes full of pigs upstairs but had nowhere to put them. I wonder where they all are now. When the pub was relocated to Station Road as much as possible of the old bar woodwork was reinstalled there but to me it’s not like the old place.

As a footnote, I located these two photos of the Alexandra in 1935

Coatham Hotel, Windsor Ballroom, Redcar – In Atonement Colours

Geotag Icon Show on map

One wing of the Coatham Hotel was never completed in the style of the rest of the building and the Windsor Ballroom was added some time between 1955 and 1961 (see discussion in comments). In later years it became a nightclub and a gym.

The lop-sided appearence of the hotel made it perfect to be a bombed out Dunkirk ruin when Atonement was filmed in Redcar in 2006

The building has remained derelict since with its French set-decorations still on display, until August 2011 when its been given a fresh coat of paint and is now covered.

Redcar Outdoor Swimming Pools / Skating Rink

Redcar once had an outdoor swimming pool and paddling pool next to the existing boating lake.

I recall perhaps 20 years ago the curve of the large pool was visible in the waste land between the boating lake and the swimming baths (now demolished)
This area is currently being redeveloped for the Tuned In / myPlace centre, while this was happening I noticed a lot of concrete has been dug out of that area.

Its possible these are the remains of the swimming pool, although I also have a recollection of some concrete steps leading into the ground in this area, so it could also just be an old drainage tank of some sort.

Update : Some discussion below has pointed out the concrete was actually the skating rink, thanks to those involved for clearing that up.

Lingdale Branch Junction, Railway Bridges, Kilton Thorpe

The Lingdale Branch junction went south-west to the Lingdale Ironstone Mine and south-east to the Kilton Ironstone Mine.

The central cutting was for the never completed Paddy Waddells Cleveland Extension Mineral Railway. The substantial remains of the bridge supports for the junction still stand on the edge of Kilton Thorpe

Theres a much more detailed “Palace Watch” blog being kept which also contains the history of the Palace

Below are some photos that appeared on Redcar.net, but its currently offline so I cannot credit them to the right people, if they are yours let me know.

Update : All trace of the Palace are now gone as ‘The Hub’ gets built in its place.

Back from the dead

The site is back up and running after being unsuccessfully hacked to sell dubious pharmaceticals (but breaking it in the process). I’ve had to make a lot of changes and updates as everything was pretty much untouched since 2007, part of the reason it was vulnerable to hijack.

For anyone who’s interested the following upgrades have been made.

  • WordPress 2.0.5  to 3.2
  • Akismet Spam Filter 2.0 to 2.5.3
  • Dagon Design Sitemap Generator 2.7 to 3.0
  • Flickr Photo Album 0.85 to 1.1
  • Geo Mashup 1.0.4 to 1.3.11

If you spot anything broken let me know.

Eston Mines Walk Saturday July 9th

The will soon be an opportunity to pick the brains of local author and mining expert Simon Chapman.
A Guided Walk to look at the Ironstone Mining Remains at Eston on Saturday 9th July 2011.

Meet in the public car park behind Eston Institute at 10 a.m
We shall look at the Site of Trustee Drift, Old Bank, then across to New Bank before taking the route of the former railway to the S.S. Castle and Wilton Lane
The route is not too steep to the level railway track, but likely to be muddy
Return to the start point possibly around 4 p.m., perhaps
Don’t forget to bring lunch

St Helens Church and East Lodge, Eston

St Helens Church in Eston was a Grade II listed building, it originated in the 12th Century and was in use until 1962, before becoming a cemetary chapel until 1985. The church was heavily vandalised and by 1987 was ‘in a critical state of disrepair’. A fire followed in December 1992 and during this time the church was being illegally demolished and stonework stolen. Thankfully in 1998 the remains of the church were removed to Beamish who have an excellent set of photos

The church is currently being rebuilt at Beamish as of May 2011.

Nothing remains on the site except a plaque and outline of the church

The East Lodge of cemetary seems to have suffered a similar fate and it currently completely burned out.

It is however the subject of a relatively recent planning application, so it may be on the verge of being restored.
